The special education program in the Chilton County school system is committed to providing a full continuum of services for students with special needs.  Chilton County schools serve students ages 3-21.  Special education services for children with disabilities are provided in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, Amendments of 2004 and Alabama Act 106.  Our department utilizes a team approach that involves all stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, support staff, and outside agencies in order to meet the everchanging needs of our students as well as to enhance best practices in the classroom for all students. 
 
 
Students identified as eligible for special education services must meet federal and state eligibility requirements as having a disability in addition to demonstrating a need for specially designed instruction in order to access the general education curriculum.

  •          Developmental Delay (DD)
  •          Emotional Disability (ED)

  •          Other Health Impairment (OHI)

The Chilton County Board of Education has Child Find procedures in place to ensure that all children within our jurisdiction, ages birth to twenty-one, are identified, located and evaluated, regardless of the severity of the disability.  Child Find procedures also apply to students who reside within our district who are enrolled in private schools, who are highly mobile, or who are suspected of having a disability even if they are progressing from grade to grade.  For more information, call the Chilton County Board of Education, Special Education Department at (205)280-2900.

The Jefferson County Board of Education has Child Find procedures that ensure that all children within its jurisdiction, ages birth to twenty-one, regardless of the severity of their disability, and who need special education and related services are identified, located, and evaluated.  These Child Find procedures also apply to children who attend private schools, within the Jefferson County Board of Education district, highly mobile children with disabilities (i.e. migrant and homeless children, or children who are wards of the state), and children who are suspected of having a disability and are in need of special education even though they are advancing from grade to grade.
